“We must learn to read signs the way we read Scripture—with the Holy Spirit’s help … The language of doors requires the gift of discernment … the ability to appraise a situation with supernatural insight. It’s prophetic perception that sees past problems and envisions possibilities. Simply put, it’s picking up what God is throwing down.”
—Mark Batterson, Whisper
In Scripture we see doors of opportunity, doors to the kingdom of God and doors to answered prayer. Read the following verses about open doors:
Revelation 3:8
I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
Colossians 4:3
At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison—
1 Corinthians 16:8-9
But I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost, for a wide door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.
Acts 14:27
And when they arrived and gathered the church together, they declared all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.
2 Corinthians 2:12-13
When I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, even though a door was opened for me in the Lord, my spirit was not at rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I took leave of them and went on to Macedonia.
Matthew 7:7-8
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
Reflect: God opens doors, and He also closes them. As you seek God, have you experienced Him doing either? How do we know when it is God opening or closing the door? It can be difficult to discern. We rely on His Word, prayer, the Holy Spirit, and the wise counsel of other believers to help us.
