“The best way to hear from the Spirit is to fill the mind with the Word of God, accompanied by careful reading and meditation on the sacred text.”  —Transforming Prayer by Daniel Henderson

As you read Psalm 46 below, use the 4/4 prayer model Daniel Henderson teaches in his book, Transforming Prayer:

  1. Reverence: Who Is God? Name truths about God from this psalm. As you sit with those, put them into prayers like, I praise you, Lord, that you have been my refuge when … thank you for helping me when I encountered trouble when …
  2. Response: How Should I Respond? How might you respond based on what you learned about God and His character? Lord, I confess and surrender my fear (v. 2) about … I submit my _________ (situation, thoughts, plans) to you. Help me to be still (stop striving, let go, relax) and seek your glory alone (v. 10).
  3. Requests: What Should I Pray About? Now we are ready to pray from a place of worship and surrender to God: I ask for your strength (v. 1) in order to … I pray for your gladness and joy in the midst of … Because you “make wars cease” (v. 9), I ask you to work in _________ (this relationship) to bring peace and reconciliation.
  4. Readiness: Where Do I Go From Here? As we get ready to enter our day out in the spiritual war zone, pray about battles and struggles: Lord, I will trust in your presence and protection (vv. 7, 11) today as I … Because you are mighty in confronting your enemies (v. 9), I will trust you to overcome my struggle with …
  5. Reverence: End your prayer time going back to recognize God and His character, thanking and praising Him for who He is and what He's done.

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
    God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
    he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Come, behold the works of the Lord,
    how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
    he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
