Yesterday we read through Colossians 1:15-23, looking for descriptions of Christ. Here are some that stood out to me: the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation and firstborn from the dead, the head of the church body. All things were created by Him, through Him, and for Him. The fullness of God dwelt in Christ. Not part of God, but all of God dwelt in Him.
Some other Scriptures come to mind when I think about these descriptions of Christ:
John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Hebrews 1:1-4
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
1 Corinthians 10:1-4
For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.
Reflect: What do you learn about Christ in these passages? I used to think Jesus came on the scene in the New Testament when He was born here on earth. I love thinking about Jesus always being there from the beginning of time, throughout all of Scripture and all eternity. He didn’t just show up when He was born into a human body. Sometimes that thought hurts my brain, but it also greatly comforts me. How awesome is our God! When it feels like my world—our world—is falling apart, in Him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:17) Yes and amen!
Lord thank You that all things hold together in You. You know it all, You’re in it all, and You’re in charge of it all. For all eternity. Amen!
